Course Description
Prerequisite – Passing grade in Beginning Algebra  or Instructor’s Approval
The sequence of topics provides a logical development of elementary algebra. The student acquires adequate skills with the emphasis on the development of the concepts through reasoning rather than on mechanical manipulations. The material covered uses statistics and geometry as settings of work with linear expressions and sentences. Probability provides a context of algebraic fractions, functions, and set ideas. There is much work with graphing. Applications motivate all topics, and include exponential growth and compound interest.
 
Required Materials
  • Notebook- for math only with 2 sections (notes and homework)
  • Folder- for keeping math handouts and syllabus
  • Textbook- needs to be covered and brought to class every day
  • Pencils- no pens
  • Graphing Calculator

Be Ready- Be on time to class with completed homework and all necessary materials.

Be Responsible- Participate in all class activities, get help when you need it, make up missed work, and accept consequences for your actions.
 
Grading Policy
Your quarter grade is based on points earned from tests/quizzes, homework, and projects.  Your 1st semester grade will be 45%- 1st quarter, 45%- 2nd quarter, and 10% semester test.  Your 2nd semester grade will be 45%- 3rd quarter, 45%- 4th quarter, and 10% semester test.

Homework
Homework will be assigned daily.  If it is a book assignment it must follow the accepted format or it will be given no credit.  Homework will make up approximately 30-40% of your quarter grade.  It is very important for you to do all assigned problems.  Homework points are based on effort and correct work- you must show work to receive credit.  Daily assignments will be worth 4 points.
  • Late work will be accepted but will only receive  at most ½ credit, if you have an excused absence you have 2 days to make the assignment up and receive full credit.
  • I will allow one late assignment per quarter that will be marked as “dropped” in the grade book.
  • In order to receive a grade at the end of each quarterALL assignments, quizzes, and tests must be turned in.
 
 
Tests and Quizzes
You will be tested on each chapter.  Tests will be based on correct work as well as correct answer.  You will also be given quizzes to check for understanding.  Tests and quizzes will make up approximately 60-70% of your quarter grade.
  • If you miss a test or quiz you must arrange a time to take it when you return.
  • If you miss the day before a test you will still be expected to take the test as any new material covered will not be on that test.  Typically the day before a test will be some review.
 
Attendance
Regular attendance is very important to obtain the maximum benefit of the class.  If you are absent from class it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and complete any assignments that were given.  As outlined in the Wabasha Handbook, you will be marked tardy if you come late to class without a pass.  If you are tardy 3 times in a quarter, it will equal 1 unexcused absence for the class and result in a detention.  If you have 6 or more tardies you will be referred to the office.  If you are tardy 10 minutes or more it will be recorded as an unexcused absence.  Note: An unexcused absence will result in one increment grade reduction (i.e. grade changes from C to C-) and office consequences.
 
Keys to succeeding in Algebra 1.5
  • Keep your notes and assignments labeled and organized.
  • If you are gone make sure you find out what you missed.
  • Don’t procrastinate!  Don’t wait until the last minute to do your assignments.
  • Ask for help!  If you do not understand a concept, ask a friend or me for help.  I am very willing to come in before school or stay after school to help you learn.  Just don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Don’t cheat!  If you are cheating or letting someone cheat you will receive an F on the assignment, quiz, or test.
  • Don’t give up!  If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.
