What is Speech and Language Therapy?

What is a speech or language impairment?

A speech or language impairment means a communication disorder, such as stuttering, impaired articulation, difficulty forming sentences, recalling information or using productive language, or a voice impairment, that adversely affects a student's academic performance or social experiences.

How do I know if my child needs speech or language therapy?

If you have concerns regarding your child's speech or language development please contact one of the speech pathologists at W-K or talk to your child's classroom teacher. If determined that your child is in possible need of speech and language services a meeting would be scheduled to discuss a speech and language evaluation. With a young child, the preschool screening would indicate their speech and language abilities. If your child is not yet in school, but you have concerns, do not wait until they enter the school system. We have a birth-three program that has very beneficial to the children involved in it.

What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy at W-K takes place in quiet therapy room, separate from your child's classroom, individually or in a small group working towards similar goals. There is one speech-language pathologist working with your child towards his or her unique goals two or three times a week. Within the speech and language room we use a variety of fun sanctities, such as educational games and interactive sanctities, in order to keep you child engaged and having fun while learning. We pair those fun sanctities with structured sanctities which involve more concentration from the child in order to instill what they are working on into their memory. Since we work with many young children, we try to make speech and language therapy time a welcoming part of tier day to the children so they want to come.
