Kindergarten Letter Sound Fluency Protocol

Letter Sound Fluency Protocol

*WATCH VIDEO DEMONSTRATION

Materials Needed:  ALL Found in Student Folder

*Letter Sound Student Copy

  1. Adult points to the letter on the student copy.
  2. Child says the sound once.  (If it takes longer than 5 seconds, give them the correct sound and have them repeat it after you.)
  3. Adult continues to point to the letters moving across one row at a time.
  4. Note the number of mistakes at the bottom of the student copy.  (This can be done by simply making tally marks at the bottom of the page.)
  5. Continue this process until the page is completed which means ALL 11 rows.
  6. The number of mistakes should “decrease” each day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kindergarten Word Segmenting Protocol

Word Segmenting: Syllables or Sounds Protocol

Materials Needed: ALL Found in Student Folder

*Duck Template (Left side of Folder)

*Yellow/Red Chips

*Word Lists (Left Side of Folder)

*Phoneme Segmenting Form (Found in Weekly Packet)

 

  1. Adult dictates a word to the student from the word list or phoneme segmenting form.
  2. Student pulls down a chip on the Duck Template for each syllable or sound in the dictated word.
  3. Adult choose a specific sound from the dictated word and has the child point to that chip.  Repeat this same process for syllables.
  4. Adult chooses another word and repeat process.
  5. Try to select about 10 words per session.

 

 

 

Additional Ideas for Syllables instead of using chips:

  • Clap It Out: The best way for children to hear how many syllables are in a word is to clap to each word part. For example, say the word “pencil” out loud. There are two parts: “pen” “cil”. When you clap to each part, you would clap two times. “Store” has one part, so you would clap one time. Say words while your students claps out each word part. Can you find words that have one, two, three and four parts? Make a list.
  • Paper-Wad Toss: Label the fronts of four paper grocery bags with the numbers 1 to 4. Then call out a word and have a student toss a paper-wad “ball” into the bag that indicates the correct number of syllables. Take turns calling out words and tossing paper wads. Keep the game going as fast as possible.
  • Syllable War: Write the words above on cards. Shuffle the cards. Have 2 children play. Each picks a card. The person who picks the word with the biggest number of syllables takes the cards. If the words have the same number, draw another card until 1 is bigger. The player with the most cards wins.

Building Sentences Protocol

 

*WATCH VIDEO DEMONSTRATION

 

Materials Needed: ALL FOUND IN STUDENT FOLDER

*Word Reading Student Copy (Found in Weekly Packet)

*Blank Word Box Sheet (Found in Left Side of Folder)

*Scissors

*Pencil

*Zip-loc Bag (Found in Left Side of Folder)

 

  1.  Adult cuts apart Word Reading word list.
  2. Adult cuts apart the Blank Word Box Sheet
  3. Adult chooses 10 words.
  4. Student reads the 10 words out loud.  Adult helps student pronounce words if needed.
  5. Student uses the words to create a sentence.  If another word is needed to make the sentence, adult writes the word needed on one of the blank boxes.
  6. Student reads the sentence back to the adult before coming up with a new sentence.
  7. Student should come up with 3-5 sentences.
  8. Keep cut apart words in Zip-loc bag.
  9. Try to use new words every day.
  10. Throw away words after the week but KEEP Zip-loc.
