ROAR: Repeated Oral Assisted Reading Protocol

*WATCH VIDEO DEMONSTRATIONS

Materials Needed:  ALL Found in Student Folder

*Student Copy of Reading Form Passage

*Assessor Copy of Reading Form Passage

*1 Minute Timer (Smart Phone, Kitchen Timer, Etc.)

*Student Tracker (Own Finger, Pen Tip, Witchy Finger)

*2 Pens of Different Color

  1. Adult sits next to the student at a table.
  2. The passage is placed in front of the student.
  3. Pretest: Time the student for 1 minute as they read the passage.  Adult marks mistakes on the Assessor Copy while student reads.
  4.  Adult puts a slash mark after the last word read by the student after the minute.
  5.  Adult will then begin the ROAR Process:
    1.  Adult says, “My turn.”  Read the first sentence aloud using a finger or pen to make sure the student is looking at each word as you read it.  Read at a natural pace with expression.
    2. Adult says, “Together.”  Have the student read the first sentence with you while they point under the words as they are read and you point above the words.
    3. Repeat the “Read Together” step until the student reads the sentence without mistakes and at the pace you have set. (You can slow down a bit if they can’t keep up.)  Do NOT correct individual words.  Read the entire sentence again so that words are learned in natural sentences.
    4. Adult says, “Your Turn.” Have your child read the sentence alone.  If he reads it without mistakes, go on to the second sentence.
    5. Repeat steps a-d as often as needed for accurate and fluent reading.
    6. Combine several sentences together after each sentence has been practiced alone.
    7. Continue practicing for 10-12 minutes.
  6. Posttest: Again time child for 1 minute.  Mark mistakes on Assessor Copy. It may be helpful to use a different color for marking the posttest.
  7. The student should show progress by reading more words per minute and they should make fewer mistakes than the pretest timing!
  8. Compliment them on their improved reading!
